Art Monster Opening Weekend

Art Monster
“My plan was to never get married. I was going to be an art monster instead. Women almost never become art monsters because art monsters only concern themselves with art, never mundane things. Nabokov didn’t even fold his own umbrella. Vera licked his stamps for him.” (Jenny Ofill, Department of Speculation, 2014)
What does it mean to become an art monster? To never concern oneself with mundane things? To be a woman who chooses this path of ravenous art creation and art consumption?
This show invites the viewer into the journey of becoming a monster of sorts, the process of giving up the mundane for the promise of an artistic life. What is the relationship between creativity and selfishness? What must be given up in order to give form to something else? How literally do we bring the monsters that haunt us and the monsters we embody into our visible work? How do we meet the monstrous parts of ourselves with curiosity and compassion?
ART MONSTER points toward what is made possible through artistic obsession and also what is lost when turning away from the mundane and ordinary. New worlds and beings come into creation, sure, but there are also dishes in the sink, calls left unanswered, reminders of a life left behind. ART MONSTER both celebrates what is found and grieves what is lost in pursuit a creative life.
All original rugwork is hand-stitched using wools and raw linen, and custom framed.
Tarot Deck Project
In conversation with the archetypal images of the Rider Waite tarot deck, I will be interpreting each of the 78 cards in my own style and medium over the course of the year. Each wool + raw linen rug will be individually framed.
Measurements: 19.5” L x 9.75” W x 1.75” D

Tarot Deck Project
As an ongoing exploration of archetypal imagery, I will be interpreting the full deck of Tarot Cards over a one-year period. Please click on “Tarot Deck Project” on the Contact page or click HERE if you are interested in purchasing one or more of the original works associated with this project.

Each Station, A Portal
Pittsburgh - Montana - Los Angeles - Pittsburgh.
Last summer, on a two-week train loop to the West Coast and back, I sat in a narrow seat and started working on rugs. I took inspiration from scenes outside the window and from station stops along the way. After returning home, the images reemerged as visitations: dreams, flashbulb memories, renderings that appeared in new rug art. Each of these squares is now another window of sorts, a glimpse of moments that haunt and travel with me long after stepping off the train.
All purchase inquiries should be directed to Chelsea Schilling through the Curator link on the Scratch & Co. Gallery webpage, where price information is also available: https://scratchandcopgh.com/the-gallery
